COULD THERE BE AN X-MEN 3 AND CHAKAN 2 IN OUR FUTURE?

Before the days of Marvel’s Spider-Man and Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3, console exclusive comic book video games were a big selling point of the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive. Spider-Man vs. The Kingpin, or simply Spider-Man (1991), was the first ever 16-bit console Spider-Man game and it was followed two years by X-Men when the team was arguably the hottest thing going in comics at the time. 1993’s X-Men was followed by a sequel in 1995, the vastly superior Clone Wars, and like it was on the Game Gear, Sega’s console X-Men series was supposed to be rounded out in a trilogy that never happened. Here’s Josh from Panels to Pixels to explain the story of X-Women: The Sinister Virus, a game that was in development from the team that crafted the Genesis version of The Adventures of Batman and Robin, Clockwork Tortoise:

There could be hope now that we could possibly see X-Women, at least according to Ed Annunziata, a veteran of the Genesis/Mega Drive era who worked on Spider-Man vs. The Kingpin, both X-Men games as well as Ecco the Dolphin among others. On Saturday, May 11th, Ed via his Twitter account made it public that he trying to convince Tommy Tallarico, the CEO of Intellivision, to bring back X-Women for their new console, the Amico, which is set to release next year.

This comes not long after Tommy announced that he’s creating a third entry of another beloved 16-bit franchise, Earthworm Jim, for the console with the help of the creative team who helped make the first and second Earthworm Jim games. X-Women could be a big draw for the Amico, especially alongside Earthworm Jim, but unlike that game, X-Women would require a sign-off from Marvel, so while Tommy and Ed could be more than willing to finish the Genesis X-Men trilogy, they have to do so with the blessing of Marvel.

X-Women is not the only comic book game sequel Ed Annunziata hopes to get off the ground. In an episode of the Play Comics podcast from this past March where Ed was interviewed about Chakan: The Forever Man, he also mentioned that he hopes to make a sequel to that game as well.
