Injustice 2 developer Netherrealm Studios was gearing up for a new character reveal tomorrow, but it looks like someone beat them to it. Images as well as gameplay footage was found on the Neogaf forums of the latest character coming to the upcoming DC Comics fighter. The new combatant? None other than the Clown Prince of Crime, the Joker. While it may seem like a no-brainer that he’s in the game, I even thought this wasn’t really news at first even, but it’s interesting given the canon of the Injustice universe.
The first game in the franchise, Injustice: Gods Among Us, took place in the universe where Superman brutally murdered the Joker because through some machinations, he tricked the Man of Steel into killing Lois Lane who was carrying his unborn child. The Joker from the first game was one pulled from an alternate universe where the tragedy was prevented however in Injustice 2, all the characters represented are those solely from the universe where Superman became a dictator. Does this mean that the original Joker is back somehow (certainly not out of the question given comic book logic)? Or is this someone else taking up the mantle similar to how Damien Wayne was Nightwing in Injustice: Gods Among Us’s story mode?
The images leaked via Neogaf are very un-Joker like, traditionally speaking, with one image sadly taking after Jared Leto’s take on the character in last year’s Suicide Squad.
