LEGO DIMENSIONS BRINGS DC AND LEGO CHARACTERS INTO THE TOYS-TO-LIFE CATEGORY (UPDATE)

First came Skylanders, then Disney Infinity, and now: Lego Dimensions.

Given the boatload of money that has been made by both Disney and Activision in the “toys-to-life” category, it comes at no surprise that Lego would want to get in on a piece of the action, and that’s what they appear to be doing in Lego Dimensions. Discovered on Reddit, a user posted an ad for Toys R Us listing the yet to be announced game coming for the Wii U, PS3/PS4, and the Xbox 360/One. The initial bundle comes with three characters across different properties: Batman from DC Comics, Gandalf from Lord of the Rings and Wildstyle/Lucy from The Lego Movie. Differing from what others have done with games of this type thus far, the set also comes with a vehicle, Batman’s Batmobile, as well as a Lego Toypad (presumably the portal that this game will use) and brick to construct a Lego Gateway, sort of like a Stargate for Lego characters. As always this will come courtesy of publisher WB Games and series creator TT Games. The description of the game is as follows:

“When a mysterious and powerful vortex suddenly appears in various LEGO® worlds, different characters from DC Comics, Lord of the Rings and the LEGO Movie are swept away. To save their friends, Batman, Gandalf and Wyldstyle bravely jump into the vortex to rescue their friends and fight to save all of LEGO humanity.

Let your creativity be your guide as you build the LEGO Gateway to adventure, journeying through unexpected worlds and teaming-up with unlikely allies on the quest to defeat the evil Lord Vortech. Play with characters you never thought you could see in a LEGO game together, using vehicles and weapons you never thought possible. LEGO Bad Cop driving the DeLorean Time Machine: why not?! The Ninjago Masters of Spinjitsu fighting alongside Wonder Woman … yes, please! Get ready to break the rules, because the only rule with LEGO Dimensions is that there are no rules.

The LEGO Dimensions Starter Pack is all you need to begin – build your base and embark on a fantastic quest.”

This announcement of Lego Dimensions brings with it some mixed emotions personally. I’m a huge fan of the Lego series of games but so far have been underwhelmed with what I’ve played of the “toys-to-life” games, mainly Disney Infinity 2.0. The Lego games have always brought with them a ton of content to play through, something that cannot be said for Disney Infinity which hinges too much on its user-created toybox mode for my liking.

There’s also the matter of the characters. The recent DC and Marvel Lego games have had upwards of 150 characters that came already on the disc, and now suddenly to have that broken up via mini-fig purchasing is disheartening. In many ways the Lego series to me at least are the last bastion of light and colourful games amidst a sea of boring shooters and other derivative genres with barely over a handful of hours worth of gameplay and content. Between Lego Marvel Super Heroes and Lego Batman 3: Beyond Gotham I’ve clocked close to one hundred hours that I do not regret. I’m also unsure how much fun its going to be to collect Lego mini-fig characters when they’re so basic compared to the more detailed and displayable Skylanders and Disney Infinity figures. Price will also be a factor, as is the cost per figure is too high, this may not be the runaway success they’re hoping for.

That all being said, right now we know very little about this game and hopefully we’ll hear more about it shortly. Given TT Games track record with the Lego games there’s no reason to think this will not be a blast to play, and the mixing of properties worked really well in The Lego Movie so why not in this game? Also according to the description there are hints that Back to the Future, a property yet to be worked on by TT Games, may show up and if it does, they’ve got me sold.
