THE FUTURE OF DREDD

For all of Dredd Month I’ve looked at Judge Dredd games from the past, so to close out the event, I’d like to look into the potential future for the character in the video game world.

1) POINT ONE: JUDGE DREDD WOULD MAKES A GREAT FPS CHARACTER

If Judge Dredd: Dredd Vs. Death and Judge Dredd on PSOne taught me anything is that the Judge Dredd property and first-person shooting fit extremely well together. Todays video game market is flooded with sci-fi and military shooters, so why not a game starring a character that is THE face of the law AND resides in a post-apocalyptic science fiction universe? A fully HD Mega City One on either PC, PS4 or Xbox One could be utterly beautiful in its urban decay and a blast to mow down the low lives with Dredd’s trademark Lawgiver in, which brings me to my next point…

2) POINT TWO: THE LAWGIVER JUSTIFIES KINECT AND VOICE COMMANDS

Raise your hand if you LOVE Kinect? Anyone? Avengers: Battle for Earth was good….in any case, Kinect has been considered by many gamers to be the downfall of controller based traditional games, but one area where it could be put to use is its voice command capabilities. Imagine entering into a firefight with standard fire selected for your Lawgiver, then being ambushed by a heavy-type enemy with an insanely large caliber weapon, saying “high ex” and switching to that ammo in game. Yeah, I heard you, hotshot indeed.

Makes you want to sell your Kinect-less Xbox One and PS4 at the thought of it, huh?

3) POINT THREE: CAN’T MAKE A MOVIE? MAKE A VIDEO GAME!!!

Time will only tell if we’ll ever get a sequel to 2012’s Dredd, but another route that the creative team could go if a film falls through is the video game industry. Shooters are all the rage, and as stated in the first point, Judge Dredd makes an awesome FPS protagonist. The budget for AAA games keep sky-rocketing as the years go on, so financially it may not make sense given Dredd’s relative low budget, but it has been a proven model in the past. One example would be the tie-in video game the Chronicles of Riddick: The Escape from Butcher Bay that put Starbreeze on the map and is still regarded as one of the best games on the original Xbox. A more recent example is 2009’s Ghostbusters from Atari that reunited the cast of the franchise for the first time Ghostbusters 2. Given Karl Urban’s passion for the property, I would place a large wager that he’d show up in a recording booth with his helmet on through the entire session to provide the voice of the title character.

4) POINT FOUR: OCTOBER 1ST IS THE DAY OF DREDD

Dredd Month may be over in a couple of days, but as one chapter ends, another begins. If you follow the “Make a Dredd” sequel campaign on either Twitter or Facebook, you’ll know that this Wednesday is the “Day of Dredd” where you the consumer are charged with purchasing a copy of one of the best action films of all time again in hopes of showing that yes, a Dredd sequel is viable. If you haven’t bought it (if not, shame on you!) pick yourself up a copy, you will not be disappointed. If you already have a copy, get one for a friend or heck, a total stranger, just make your voice heard.

And if I can’t convince you, maybe the power of song can:
