COMIC GAMERS ASSEMBLE FALL PREVIEW

With the summer technically over for most (particularly if you’re a student) we now look towards the cluster bombing that is the fall video game season, where every publisher tries to squeeze as much product onto stove shelves to capture us in the fever of the holiday season. While the rest of the video game themed websites determine  if this year’s Assassin’s Creed and Call of Duty’s (Duty’s? Duties?) are worth your time and money, I’m here to show off what upcoming comic book games you can look forward to over the next several months.

DISNEY INFINITY 2.0: MARVEL SUPER HEROES (SEPTEMBER 23RD, 2014)

Last year Disney jumped into the toy/video game crossover genre started by Activision with the Skylanders franchise in a big way in Disney Infinity. Long time fans of Disney and Pixar films rejoiced at the prospect of scooping up toys to play in digital playgrounds and even create some themselves. Many however, including myself obviously, liked the idea, but would rather hold out for when the concept was applied to Marvel’s stable of characters. Disney answers that request in a big way in the second iteration of the franchise, now less than three weeks away from launch. Out of the gate the package comes with the Iron Man, Thor and Black Widow figures, with the option to purchase the remaining roster of the Avengers including Captain America, Hawkeye, Nick Fury. Those looking to bash some bad guys as the jade giant the Hulk will have to shell out for the pricey collectors edition, exclusive to the PlayStation 3 and 4 platforms, that comes with all the Avengers, as well as a snazzy display case for your figures. Shoppers take note: as of this writing, at least in Canada, the collectors edition is only listed on the Futureshop and BestBuy websites.

Disney also has a lot of content planned to both play and purchase post launch as well, including a Spider-Man play set and another starring the cast of this year’s most popular film, the Guardians of the Galaxy.

LEGO BATMAN 3: BEYOND GOTHAM (NOVEMBER 11TH, 2014)

TT Games has only gotten better at their craft since releasing the first Lego Batman all the way back in 2008, giving us a terrific sequel in 2011 that introduced voices, other DC heroes as well as an open world to the franchise, the well received Lord of the Rings and Hobbit games, and of course last year’s phenomenal Lego Marvel Super Heroes. The Dark Knight breaks free of the shackles of Gotham City in this third outing, venturing into space with the rest of the Justice League and the Legion of Doom to stop Brainaic from conquering the known universe. The “DC Super Heroes” title in part 2 felt like an after thought, with only Superman playing a major role and the rest being delegated to the final few missions, but I wouldn’t expect that in this outing. Not only do Batman and Robin both have new suits to play around with, but they’re also joined by a group of over 150 characters from the DC Universe, including big figs (like the Hulk in Lego Marvel) and transformation characters such as Clark Kent.

THE WALKING DEAD SEASON’s 1 AND 2, THE WOLF AMONG US SEASON 1 (UNSPECIFIED, 2014)

TWAU-platforms

Both The Walking Dead and The Wolf Among Us finished up their respective seasons during this summer on digital platforms, but those holding out for a complete season on disc were left out in the cold, especially those who want to enjoy the titles on either their brand new PS4 and Xbox One’s. Similar to the collected edition for their other series, Telltale is releasing the entire first season of The Wolf Among us on the current generation of systems (PS3 and Xbox 360) and for the first time ever, the PS4 and Xbox One. The Walking Dead will also release across all the same mentioned systems, with PS4 and Xbox One owners getting the opportunity to purchase both seasons one and two. While it is frustrating to have to double dip, or maybe even triple dip, on The Walking Dead, it’s an unfortunate must if you want to continue the story into the already announced season three on your shiny new system of choice.

SPIDER-MAN UNLIMITED (SEPTEMBER 2014)

Strapped for case after buying all those expensive Christmas gifts? Or perhaps looking for a cheap app to play around with on your new mobile or table device? Gameloft’s got you covered!

To tie-in with this fall’s major Spider-Man story in the comic pages, Spider-Verse, that unites Spider-Man, and women, from across time and space,  Gameloft is releasing Spider-Man Unlimited. This endless runner will allow you to play as numerous variations of Spider-Man across the character’s 50+ years of history, as the web-slinger tries to stop the Sinister Six from bringing an end to the multiverse.

MARVEL: CONTEST OF CHAMPIONS (FALL 2014)

marvel conquest of champions

Last year DC and WB Games had a big hit on their hands with Injustice: Gods Among Us, a fighter that pitted some of the most popular members of the DC universe against one another, and now Marvel it seems is wanting to get in on a piece of the action. Marvel has had a long history of fighting against Capcom in the arena, but this fall the heroes and villains will fight among themselves in the mobile fighting game Contest of Champions. No real information has been given about the title, not even a release or pricing model, since the game was announced during this year’s San Dieo Comic-Con, but expect a story penned by Sam Humphries (The Legendary Star-Lord)  and combatants like Spider-Man, Hulk, and Captain America among others.

BATMAN: ARKHAM ORIGINS COMPLETE EDITION (?????)

batman arkham origins complete edition

During the summer, a posting came up on Amazon Germany that listed a complete edition for last year’s WB Games Montreal developed Batman: Arkham Origins on both the PS3 and Xbox 360. No official word or press release was given from WB Games, but upon inspecting this title as early as today, the collection is still posted for sale with one seller listing a copy of the game. Both Asylum and City before it received “Game of the Year” editions that gathered all the post release DLC in one convenient package, so it would not be unsurprising for Origins to get the same treatment. Given the lack of an “Arkham” game this year with Batman: Arkham Knight delayed into 2015, it would be a nice treat for those who need an “Arkham” fix, even better if the collection some how made its way to PS4 and Xbox One like The Last of Us and Tomb Raider 2013. WB Games held the Injustice announcement until October last year for a game that came out in November, so it’s still in the realm of possibility to see this game rear its head.

Whether you’re a Marvel, DC, or non-super hero comic fan, there’s plenty of games to fill your time and empty your wallet. What games in the bunch are you most excited for? Leave it in the comments.
