Today marked the day that Disney and Marvel brought the goods about the next installment of last year’s smash hit Disney Infinity, which was teased earlier this month in a short video featuring the shield wielded by the star spangled Avenger, Captain America. There are a lot of details to get to, so let’s jump right in, shall we?
Firstly, the official title of the game is Disney Infinity 2.0 Marvel Super Heroes and will be available on most platforms the first Disney Infinity launched on (Nintendo Wii U, PS3, Xbox 360, PC but no Wii this time around.) A mobile version is also coming to iOS and for those who held off on buying version 1.0 because of A) the impending release of the PS4/Xbox One and B) they were waiting for the Marvel characters to come (also known as, THIS GUY), 2.0 will be available day and date on the new current generation of consoles. All figures, playsets and accessories that you may have purchased for part one will be forward compatible as well.
The story of the game will be penned by Marvel veteran Brian Michael Bendis (Miles Morales: Ultimate Spider-Man, Guardians of the Galaxy), who also helped developed the story for the free to play MMO Marvel Heroes and 2005’s Ultimate Spider-Man. The first wave of figures will be the roster from the 2012 mega blockbuster film: Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, Black Widow, Hulk and Hawkeye. The starter pack will come with the game as well as the Iron Man, Thor and Black Widow figures. Nick Fury himself, Samuel L. Jackson, was on hand at the reveal and went on to say that more characters would be announced as soon as E3 2014. A brief video showing the new characters in action teased villains Loki and M.O.D.O.K and heroes such as Spider-Man and Rocket Raccoon and Groot from the Guardians of the Galaxy. Outside of the teaser video, it was confirmed that Iron Patriot and the Winter Soldier would also be making an appearance. Agent Coulson’s flying car Lola from TV’s Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D will also be one of the many new vehicles that will be available.
From a gameplay perspective, the Marvel version of Manhattan as it will appear in the game will be four times as big as the largest environment in version 1.0. Given that were talking about super heroes here, combat will move to the sky with both hovering and flight abilities. Heroes like Captain America and Hulk will also have super jumping abilities, and the Green Goliath will be able to climb building as well. The games level cap will also be extended to 20.
The most talked about and beloved part of the first iteration of Infinity was the toy box mode where players could let their imagination run free, and this too is receiving an upgrade. Brush tools will simplify the creation of things like cities, buildings and race tracks, while a new option to drop in automated buildings generate a world around them. A new creation mode called template was also shown where players can create new game types such as tower defense and a dungeon crawler.
Since Disney Infinity was first unveiled to the world, and even Skylanders before it, I dreamed of the day when a comic book character themed game would make it to market. From the information that was released today alone, I’m already starting to save up money for the inevitable flood of awesome figures and accessories.
